Canada’s liberal government unveils draft legislation, known as bill C-63, aimed at protecting citizens, especially children, from online hate and harmful content.
The proposed measures include stricter penalties for spreading hate, enhanced reporting requirements for child pornography, and the establishment of a digital safety regulator.
Canadians would gain the ability to flag harmful content for removal, file complaints against hate speech, and implement parental controls on social media platforms.
The move follows similar regulations in the EU and UK, while facing criticism for potential infringements on free speech from privacy groups and conservative opposition leaders.
