The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) recently approved the release of Rs19 billion for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Ramazan package, a move aimed at ensuring timely distribution to vulnerable families. This announcement follows PM Shehbaz’s February 12th announcement of a proposed Rs38 billion relief package designed to aid over 12 million households—approximately 36 million people.

In its post on social media, the finance ministry highlighted that Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired an ECC meeting remotely. The ministry confirmed the approval for “immediate release” of the Rs19 billion to support the prime minister’s initiative. According to the finance ministry, “the remaining Rs25 billion will be released as needed in accordance with fiscal space and guidelines.”

The relief package, titled ‘Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Ramazan 2026’, is crafted to provide targeted cash assistance to low-income households during the holy month. Leveraging National Socio-Economic Registry data, this initiative ensures transparency and objective beneficiary selection. The funds will be disbursed through formal banking channels and digital platforms for a secure, efficient, and dignified delivery.

During the ECC meeting, there was also approval for “in-principle” allocation of Rs1 billion for operational expenses. The finance ministry directed that detailed cost breakdowns should be shared with the Finance Division to maintain transparency and adhere to financial regulations. Additionally, any unutilized funds will be returned in accordance with established procedures.

This approach underscores a balanced strategy between swift relief delivery and robust financial oversight, reinforcing accountability and efficiency in the execution of the Ramazan package.
