AHMEDABAD, INDIA: A group of foreign students studying in India’s western Gujarat state faced a terrifying ordeal as they were violently assaulted by a Hindu far-right mob while observing prayers during the sacred month of Ramadan.
The distressing incident unfolded at Gujarat University premises in Ahmedabad, resulting in the injury of at least four students and extensive property damage.
Reports indicate that the students had gathered for the Ramadan tarawih prayer within the boys’ hostel due to the absence of a mosque on the university campus. However, their peaceful worship was disrupted when a mob armed with sticks and knives stormed the premises, unleashing chaos and destruction.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing experience, detailing how the attackers shouted slogans, hurled stones, and vandalized hostel properties. Shocking videos circulated on social media showcased the aftermath, with dormitories ransacked and students’ belongings destroyed, including motorcycles and electronic gadgets.
The victims hailed from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and various African nations, highlighting the diverse composition of the targeted group. Two students sustained severe injuries and are currently undergoing medical treatment at a local hospital.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with the police commissioner confirming the receipt of complaints against the assailants. Efforts are underway to apprehend those responsible for the violent assault on the students.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has pledged stringent action against the attackers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all foreign students in the country.
Amid escalating concerns, political figures, including Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi, have called for urgent intervention to address the surge in religious intolerance and violence.
In response to the distressing event, Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Neerja A Gupta stressed the significance of cultural sensitivity and announced initiatives to provide orientation sessions for international students, aiming to enhance their familiarity with local customs and traditions.
