Government Forms Medical Panel to Examine Imran Khan’s Eye Condition

ISLAMABAD: The government has announced a two-member medical panel to assess former prime minister Imran Khan’s deteriorating eye condition. Government sources revealed this development on Saturday, highlighting that the examination is expected soon. “A decision on whether he will be transferred to a hospital will be based on the recommendations of the medical board,” the sources added.

Earlier in the week, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that Imran Khan would receive specialized treatment for his deteriorating eyesight at a dedicated medical facility. In a social media post, Tarar stated that ophthalmology experts from a specialized hospital would conduct further examinations and treatments, with a detailed report to be submitted to the Supreme Court.

He urged the public and media to avoid speculation or politicization of Khan’s medical condition.

A phone call was arranged between Khan and his sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, adhering to the directives from the Supreme Court. Jail officials confirmed that this conversation lasted over 30 minutes.

Earlier, a report by lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar as a “friend of the court” highlighted serious health concerns about Imran Khan. The report detailed how Khan’s vision has deteriorated significantly, with 85 per cent of his right eye now functioning and causing blurred vision. He had been dissatisfied with medical facilities in jail.

The report requested immediate access to ophthalmology specialists or Khan’s personal doctors, Dr Faisal Sultan and Dr Asim Yousuf. It described how Khan’s routine includes breakfast at 9:45 am, reading the Quran for an hour, using limited exercise equipment, selecting meals weekly, maintaining a structured routine despite the lack of entertainment, receiving dental care once every two years, and having some legal visits facilitated by changing jail superintendents.

The report also noted poor hygiene in Khan’s cell, including the presence of mosquitoes and insects. It recommended providing a refrigerator for safe food storage and access to books, as well as ensuring adequate medical care and family visitation rights.

According to the Supreme Court’s directives, authorities are now working on facilitating these recommendations to ensure humanitarian standards are met.

Earlier, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that Khan would receive specialized treatment at a dedicated medical facility. The decision will be based on the panel’s recommendations once they have examined Imran Khan’s condition soon.
