India’s Abhishek Sharma Hospitalised Due to Stomach Infection

India’s cricket team is facing a significant challenge heading into their crucial T20 World Cup match against Namibia on Thursday. Media reports indicate that India’s main opening batter, Abhishek Sharma, has been hospitalized with a stomach infection. This setback raises questions about Sharma’s availability for the upcoming clash, putting pressure on the national squad.

The 31-year-old player from Gujarat, who opened the batting in India’s first match of the tournament against the United States, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Delhi. According to sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sharma was admitted to the hospital on consecutive days and has not yet been discharged. His condition remains uncertain, with some tests being conducted to determine the exact cause.

Reports suggest that during his time away from the team, Sharma had previously been battling a stomach ailment but continued playing as he recovered. Assistant Coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that while in recovery, Sharma still faced some issues with his stomach and may require more days of recuperation.

If Sharma is unable to play due to health concerns, India might consider using Sanju Samson at the top of their order instead. The team’s captain, Shikhar Dhawan, would then take on the role of open bowler as a substitute option. Despite this uncertainty, Doeschate expressed optimism about Sharma’s recovery and potential return in two days’ time.

Another bright spot for India is the return of paceman Jasprit Bumrah from his absence due to illness. Bumrah attended team training sessions in Delhi on Tuesday, showing full recovery through intense bowling exercises. The inclusion of versatile allrounder Washington Sundar also brings positive news, as he has made a swift comeback after recovering from a side tear suffered during the New Zealand series.

Sundar joined the squad for practice activities including throwdowns at the nets, indicating his readiness to contribute effectively on Thursday. His participation underscores India’s continued depth and adaptability in crucial matches like this one.

The potential absence of Sharma complicates the lineup strategy but doesn’t overshadow these positive developments. As the team waits for further updates on Sharma’s condition, it remains to be seen how they will navigate through this challenge, leveraging their experienced players and tactical flexibility to secure a strong performance against Namibia in what is shaping up as a critical encounter for India at the T20 World Cup.
