Israeli Police Arrests Al-Aqsa Mosque Imam Sheikh Mohammed al-Abbasi

In occupied Jerusalem, Israeli police have detained Sheikh Mohammed al-Abbasi, the imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque, within its courtyards. This arrest has occurred amid escalating tensions and restrictions placed on worshippers at the mosque by Israeli forces. Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the move was made “without giving any reason” on a Monday evening.

Hamas, in a statement condemning the detention, described it as an unacceptable assault on Al-Aqsa’s imams and called for urgent action to protect the site from Jewish influence. The Islamic movement urged Palestinians across occupied territories to maintain vigilance at the mosque during Ramadan—a month marked by increased pilgrimages.

Israeli authorities have deployed significant police forces around the Al-Aqsa compound, including in the Old City of Jerusalem. Palestinian officials have accused Israel of imposing restrictions and bans on religious figures and activists who seek access to the site.

The significance of Al-Aqsa extends beyond its role as a holy sanctuary for Muslims; it is also a central symbol of Palestinian identity. Despite longstanding arrangements allowing Jewish visitors, there has been a recurring tension over the mosque’s control. Over Ramadan, which typically sees hundreds of thousands of Palestinians attending prayers at the site, Israel’s actions have further inflamed concerns.

Hamas’ condemnation underscores the ongoing conflict between Israeli authorities and the Palestinian community over the future and sovereignty of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Calls for action from international bodies like the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation add another layer to this intricate dispute.
