Karachi is set to welcome one of the most iconic vessels of Italy’s naval history, the Amerigo Vespucci, as it docks at the city’s port on December 7 (Today), marking the 29th stage of its world tour. This is the first time the legendary training ship will visit Pakistan.
The Amerigo Vespucci, a symbol of Italy’s naval heritage and a guardian of seafaring traditions for over 90 years, embarks on a monumental journey around the world. Launched on July 1, 2023, from Genoa, Italy, the vessel is currently undertaking its second global circumnavigation, which will span two years and visit 36 ports across 32 countries. The tour is part of an initiative supported by Italy’s Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other governmental bodies. It combines naval training for officer cadets with the promotion of Italy’s cultural, technological, and scientific achievements.
The Amerigo Vespucci will be officially welcomed in Karachi by a distinguished group of officials, including the Italian Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Marilina Armellin, Vice Admiral Vincenzo Montanaro (representing the Italian Chief of Naval Staff), the Italian Defence Attaché Col. Enrico Rosa, Italian Consul in Karachi Danilo Giurdanella, and various local government and military authorities.
The ship’s arrival will also feature the exhibition Siamo Mare – We Are Sea, which showcases the beauty of Italy’s seas, coasts, and landscapes. Commanded by Captain Giuseppe Lai, the Amerigo Vespucci is the longest-serving vessel of the Italian Navy, with 93 years of service.
The ship is renowned for its unique motto, “Not he who begins but that which perseveres,” attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, which symbolizes the dedication of its 400-strong crew, including naval cadets. Since its commissioning, the Amerigo Vespucci has served as a training ground for countless naval officers, combining traditional sail navigation with modern Diesel-Electric propulsion systems.
The vessel’s environmental footprint has been minimized through technological updates, including energy-efficient systems implemented during a significant overhaul in 2016. Not only a training ship, the Amerigo Vespucci is also a symbol of global goodwill. In 2007, it was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, spreading messages of peace and hope worldwide. This nomination was renewed in 2016, reflecting the ship’s ongoing role in fostering international cooperation.
The Amerigo Vespucci’s journey has also included navigating one of the most treacherous routes in the world—Cape Horn, located at the southern tip of South America. On April 5, 2024, the vessel successfully rounded Cape Horn for the first time in its 90-year history, overcoming the unpredictable weather and rough seas in this legendary passage where the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans converge.
