Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, the most senior judge of Pakistan’s Supreme Court, has taken oath as the Acting Chief Justice, the judiciary announced on Monday.
The oath was administered by Justice Munib Akhtar in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court’s Judges’ Block in Islamabad, attended by fellow judges, the Attorney General, and senior members of the legal community.
He assumes the role while Chief Justice Yahya Afridi is on an official visit to China, where he is representing Pakistan at a Judicial Conference.
During his trip, Justice Afridi is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Supreme Court of China to strengthen judicial cooperation. He is also scheduled to meet with his Iranian counterpart on the conference’s sidelines.
Meanwhile, Justice Shahid Waheed will address a session focusing on the integration of artificial intelligence in judicial processes.
Justice Mansoor’s temporary appointment comes at a time of increasing judicial engagement with global partners and efforts to modernise Pakistan’s legal system.
