KARACHI – Pakistan’s Jinnah International Airport welcomed its inaugural international flight on Thursday afternoon after extensive renovations to the central runway. The modernized facility now supports large cargo planes and wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A380, marking a significant upgrade that has significantly enhanced the airport’s operational capabilities.

The Rs8 billion-plus project was completed in just 18 months, ensuring continuous service for both domestic and international flights during construction. PAA CEO Adnan Khan emphasized this as crucial, noting how it maintained the airport’s readiness to serve diverse passenger needs without interruption.

Following successful trials on January 3rd, the runway now boasts Category 4F standards, fully compliant with international requirements for wide-body aircraft. This upgrade not only bolsters capacity but also ensures safety and efficiency—key considerations given the heavy cargo and passenger volumes expected in years to come.

The airport’s new facilities include reinforced materials to handle heavier aircraft loads, improved taxiways, and advanced lighting systems designed to aid pilots during critical landing phases. The Category 1 navigation system installed complements these enhancements by offering robust weather management capabilities, essential for operating under various environmental conditions.

As part of the ongoing modernization efforts at Jinnah International Airport, this latest upgrade is anticipated to support flights safely through 2038, making substantial investments in infrastructure and technology. The airport’s managers look forward to leveraging these improvements not just within Pakistan but also for international operations from the region, further boosting economic ties.

The completion of the runway expansion project underlines Jinnah International Airport’s commitment to evolving with global trends and providing world-class facilities to airlines and cargo operators alike.
