Pakistan stepping in as bridge builder during Middle East conflict

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has taken on a pivotal role as a bridge builder amidst the escalating tensions between the United States and Israel over Iran. This narrative began with two devastating blows: the US and Israeli strikes against Tehran on February 28th, which culminated in the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has been targeting U.S. assets and bases across Gulf countries.

Pakistan’s stance on de-escalation became evident through its diplomatic efforts. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar held several phone calls with leaders from various nations over the past few days to facilitate communication. On Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi addressed these efforts during a weekly press briefing.

Andrabi highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating communication between Tehran and other countries through open channels of contact. He explained that while not directly addressing all capitals, Pakistan has maintained an active dialogue with multiple parties, ensuring regional capitals can engage in conversations related to sovereignty, international law, and the United Nations Charter. This engagement allows Pakistan to maintain channels of communication, a position it asserts is respected globally.

Andrabi’s comments were part of broader discussions on ongoing diplomatic exchanges. He mentioned that Prime Minister Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had engaged in high-level dialogues with other states. While these exchanges continued despite the current tensions, Andrabi emphasized that Pakistan continues to engage diplomatically with the United States, including through conversations with undersecretaries at state departments and regular embassy interactions.

Pakistan’s efforts are seen as ongoing and significant within its diplomatic network, demonstrating its commitment to regional stability and dialogue amidst volatile international affairs.
