The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has put forward a resolution urging the federal government to honor party founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as a national democratic hero, advocating for his image to be featured on currency notes.
This resolution emerged during a seminar titled ‘Bhutto Reference and History,’ dedicated to discussing the legacy of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
Commending the Supreme Court’s acknowledgment of the unfairness in Bhutto’s trial, the resolution calls for conferring upon him the title of “Quaid-e-Awam” (Leader of the People) and posthumously awarding him the highest civilian honor, Nishan-e-Pakistan.
In addition to endorsing the inclusion of Bhutto’s image on currency notes, the resolution proposes the construction of a suitable monument in his honor and the designation of his mausoleum as a national shrine.
Moreover, it advocates for overturning the unjust death sentence imposed on Bhutto and establishing a “Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Award” to recognize democracy activists who have sacrificed their lives for the cause.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was sentenced to death during the tenure of former military ruler General (retired) Ziaul Haq, accused of the murder of political rival Nawab Mohammed Ahmed Qasuri.
Despite numerous petitions and appeals for clemency, including pleas from several Heads of States, Bhutto was executed on April 4, 1979.
