Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned amid nationwide protests, has requested political asylum in England, according to The Hindu. While Sheikh Hasina’s sister, Sheikh Rehana, a British citizen, has reportedly indicated that asylum is not necessary for Hasina.

India Today reported that Hasina’s plane landed in New Delhi at 5:36 PM local time at the Army’s Hindon Airbus in Ghaziabad. Indian Army officials greeted her, and she is expected to travel to London from there.

Sheikh Hasina is expected to leave, almost immediately, for London, sources told NDTV.

Sources told news agency ANI Sheikh Hasina’s plane – a Bangladesh Air Force C-130 military transport – will be parked near the Indian Air Force’s C-17 and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft hangars.

The unrest in Bangladesh has intensified, with protests demanding Hasina’s resignation resulting in significant violence. The demonstrations, which initially focused on job quotas, have expanded into broader calls for her departure. On Sunday alone, at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, were killed, raising the total death toll since the protests began in July to at least 283.
