A single gunman was killed by security forces during an attack on Temple Israel, a synagogue located on the outskirts of West Bloomfield, Michigan. Police confirmed that no one else has been injured except for the attacker, who fled into gunfire exchanges with law enforcement officers.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard addressed reporters, stating, “Security saw the individual at the temple and initiated engagement in gunfire.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her shock over the incident, emphasizing, “This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace. Antisemitism and violence have no place here,” she said.

Law enforcement was on high alert since nearly two weeks of tensions between the US and Israel escalated due to the conflict with Iran. Sheriff Bouchard noted, “We’ve been talking for almost two weeks about the potential, sadly, of this happening. Therefore, there has been sufficient preparation. All Jewish facilities in the area are expected to have increased security until we can address this situation effectively.”

Television footage revealed a significant law enforcement response in and around the synagogue, with smoke visible emanating from the building. Local media reported that the attacker first crashed his car into the sanctuary before engaging in gun exchanges.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit advised community members to stay away from the area until additional security measures are put in place. The organization added, “Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown.”

Sheriff Bouchard further stated, “All facilities will have a heightened presence around them until we can establish what led to this incident and secure the area.”
