U.S., UK to Discuss Diego Garcia Base Amid Iran Tensions

Senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, are scheduled to meet in Washington on Friday amid escalating tensions between the United States and the United Kingdom over potential military deployments against Iran.

The meeting comes at a critical juncture as both nations grapple with the implications of deploying warships and air power within striking distance of Iran. President Trump’s recent threats have raised concerns about the use of Diego Garcia, an American base in the British Indian Ocean territory that has been leased to Britain for 100 years.

Trump slammed his UK counterpart Keir Starmer over a controversial agreement allowing Mauritius sovereignty over Chagos Islands while retaining control of Diego Garcia. In a sharp social media post, Trump warned against giving away Diego Garcia, emphasizing the strategic importance of the military base in any potential U.S. strikes on Iran.

This disagreement underscores deep fissures within the Western alliance regarding regional security and future deployments. British news sources reported that the UK government denied U.S. requests to use Diego Garcia and the Royal Air Force’s Fairford base for strikes against Tehran. The United States has been pushing for a deal with Iran over its nuclear program but faces resistance from some allies.

Despite these disagreements, both sides continue diplomatic efforts. Trump ordered significant military buildup around Iran, including two aircraft carriers—already in place in the Arabian Sea and on their way to the Mediterranean—and other warships and hundreds of aircraft within reach of Iran’s territory. He has threatened force if diplomacy fails, a stance that has been met with international condemnation.

Meanwhile, Iran challenged these threats at the United Nations, accusing Trump of breaching international law and the U.N. charter. Iranian diplomats wrote an open letter to the Security Council demanding immediate cessation of threats and adherence to the ongoing diplomatic process between Tehran and Washington.

The impasse highlights complex dynamics within Western alliances and the fraught negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, as tensions rise against a backdrop of geopolitical competition in the Middle East.
