US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu unequivocally dismissed allegations suggesting any US involvement in the ousting of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from the Prime Minister’s position.

Lu made these remarks during a hearing held by the US Congress Committee concerning Pakistan’s 2024 general elections, where he provided testimony on the matter.

Affirming respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty, Lu stressed that accusations of US interference in Imran Khan’s removal lacked merit.

Regarding concerns about the safety of an American citizen, Lu underscored the gravity with which the United States treats threats against its citizens. He clarified that any charges related to ciphers were baseless and stemmed from misunderstandings.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s history and challenges, Lu highlighted the nation’s resilience, especially in the aftermath of the Afghan war. He noted the substantial involvement of women and youth in the recent elections, despite reports of election irregularities, violence, and intimidation.

Expressing dismay over reported election malpractices and violent incidents, the Assistant Secretary of State condemned attacks on media personnel and restrictions on internet and telecommunications during the electoral process. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to upholding human rights standards and stressed the necessity of fair and transparent elections in Pakistan.
