A massive fire broke out at Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic on Friday morning. Local officials reported one fatality and nine injuries.
Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the Emergency Operations Center, confirmed the death occurred at the scene and that three injured were transported to hospitals while six received treatment on-site.
The Italian woman killed was identified by an emergency official from La Romana province. Cellphone footage showed thatch-roof structures engulfed in flames as guests swam nearby.
Approximately 1,690 guests were evacuated to other accommodations. The Dominicus Palace, another Viva Wyndham resort nearby, remained unharmed and operational.
A preliminary investigation suggested the fire spread quickly due to a cane roof section being more combustible and windy conditions aiding its spread. The cause remains under investigation.
Viva Resorts by Wyndham stated they are gathering facts and coordinating with authorities but will not comment further until the process is complete.
