At least 18 people were killed when an inflatable boat carrying migrants sank off Turkey’s western province of Mugla on Wednesday. The coastguard detected the boat at 0300 GMT off the coast of Mugla’s Bodrum district and attempted to flee despite warnings to stop. It later took in water due to adverse weather and sea conditions, leading to its sinking.
A coastguard helicopter and three boats were dispatched for search and rescue operations. So far, they have rescued 21 people. The statement did not specify the boat’s departure location or destination.
