Two people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting Monday in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. The gunman also died. Police said the incident began around 11:30 a.m., with officers and a helicopter responding immediately.
Montreal police chief Fady Dagher confirmed one of their officers was killed and another seriously wounded. He did not know the identity or background of the civilian killed, nor confirm who killed them. The suspect was shot dead by police.
Public broadcaster Radio Canada reported that the injured officer is being treated at a hospital. Dagher said this was the first time a SPVM officer had been killed in the line of duty since 2002.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs urged vigilance, while Quebec Premier Christine Frechette called for allowing authorities to handle the situation without speculation.
