International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed globally today
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was marked across the globe, including Pakistan, today. The day aims to educate communities about the detrimental health, economic, and social impacts of illicit drugs.
This year’s theme is “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses”. It highlights the global campaign established by the UN to promote proactive prevention strategies and emphasize compassionate treatment for individuals struggling with drug abuse.
Despite increasing production, seizures, and use of cocaine, heroin remains dominant in global opioid markets. However, changes in the illegal supply of opioids are challenging this dominance.
The low manufacturing costs and reduced risks associated with synthetic drugs are also contributing factors to their rise on illicit markets. In response, this year’s campaign will showcase collaborative efforts by international, local, and national governments, as well as civil society and the public, to develop innovative strategies for reducing both demand and supply of illicit drugs and mitigating related threats.
