Portugal and Pakistan mark 76th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. Since 1950, their partnership has grown across political engagement, multilateral cooperation, and economic links. The two nations share mutual respect, international cooperation, and constructive dialogue.
The Pakistani diaspora in Portugal contributes to diverse fields, reflecting strong ties between the countries. This strengthens people-to-people connections, providing a solid foundation for further relationship development.
Bilateral relations are entering a promising phase with regular contacts and shared commitment to deepen cooperation. High-level consultations in Islamabad on July 15, 2026, will review cooperation agenda and identify new collaboration avenues.
A planned visit by Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, to Pakistan in the second half of 2026 marks a significant step in strengthening political dialogue and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, education, renewable energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Potential areas for expansion include trade and investment, renewable energy, water management, agriculture and agri-technology, information technology, pharmaceuticals, textiles, infrastructure, logistics, and tourism. Portugal’s expertise in these fields can support Pakistan’s development while establishing mutually beneficial partnerships.
Portugal is ready to work with Pakistan on academic cooperation, sustainable tourism development, European programmes, joint research projects, faculty exchanges, student mobility initiatives, cultural events, tourism initiatives, business missions, sports initiatives, and art and literature collaborations. Strengthening people-to-people connections will foster mutual understanding and create opportunities beyond official diplomacy.
Portugal invites Pakistanis to explore Portugal’s openness, creativity, and international partnerships as the bilateral relationship continues to grow.
