Carlos Alcaraz swept past Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Australian Open to win his first career Grand Slam and become the youngest man in the Open era to achieve this feat. The Spaniard dominated, winning in straight sets after a slow start: 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena.
Alcaraz’s victory secured him seventh major title and firmly placed him as undisputed world number one, joining only a select group of players. At just 22 years old, he surpassed legendary Rafael Nadal, who was two years older when he won all four majors.
In the process, Alcaraz added to his existing titles from Wimbledon, the French Open, and US Open, making him the youngest man in history to win all four majors. He defeated Djokovic, who had previously won 10 straight finals at the Australian Open. This was Djokovic’s first loss in a final there.
Their seventh Slam title brought Alcaraz level with John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, and one behind Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, and Ivan Lendl in career Grand Slams. With their seven wins, they shared the spoils from their semifinal matches that also went to five sets: Alcaraz against Alexander Zverev, Djokovic with Jannik Sinner.
In his quarter-final match against Zverev, Alcaraz showed resilience and grit after battling fatigue, much like Djokovic who was fighting to win a fifth Slam despite having lost this time. The physical exertion in their semi-finals highlighted how both players had put in significant efforts through grueling matches earlier in the tournament.
Djokovic’s defeat came as he continued his quest for a 25th major title, still trailing behind Margaret Court who was watching from center court. Djokovic last won at the US Open, and since then Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner shared victories.
The match itself featured intense rallies that captivated spectators with their brilliance. Despite early challenges, Djokovic showcased his prowess in set one as he broke serves and held serve to take an initial lead. But a double fault and netted forehand from the top seed at 2-1 presented the first break point chance for Djokovic.
Alcaraz saved that moment, but kept pressing and converted on his third opportunity. He then consolidated control of the second set with breaks in both game four and five to reach 5-1. A sensational rally saw Alcaraz leapfrog again at 6-2 leading into set three.
In the third set, Djokovic dominated serves and held serve despite being pressured by an aggressive Alcaraz who broke twice for a 4-0 lead before slipping behind 3-5. Djokovic fought back hard with saves of set points but ultimately failed to save his fifth after serving out against the Spaniard’s relentless attack.
Alcaraz capitalized on these moments, taking control and sealing victory in the fourth set when he broke Djokovic for a 4-2 lead. He further tightened up his serve in decisive game six to clinch an Australian Open title and maintain his top-ranked position, while Sinner also rose one place after their matches.
This win solidified Alcaraz’s status as one of tennis’ elite players, cementing his legacy at the highest level of competition.
