The Arab League has announced an urgent gathering set for Sunday in response to the International Court of Justice’s recent ruling concerning Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip.
Anadolu Agency reports that the meeting, requested by Palestine, aims to establish a unified Arab stance following the ICJ’s decision. Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, confirmed that permanent delegates will participate in this crucial session.
The legal dispute initiated by South Africa against Israel at the ICJ on December 29 revolves around allegations of genocide in Gaza following an offensive that followed a Hamas attack on October 7. In a significant development, the UN court found merit in South Africa’s claim and issued an interim order directing Israel to cease hindering aid shipments into Gaza and improve humanitarian conditions.
Despite the ICJ’s directive, Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, resulting in a staggering toll of Palestinian casualties, particularly among women and children, according to reports from Palestinian health authorities. Israel contests this, citing nearly 1,200 fatalities in the Hamas attack.
The prolonged conflict has led to a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with 85% of its population displaced and acute shortages of vital resources like food, water, and medicine. UN assessments indicate widespread destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure, with 60% of it damaged or destroyed.
