Bangladesh Election Counting Begins Amid High Turnout

As tens of millions of Bangladeshi citizens cast their ballots in the country’s pivotal national election this Thursday, the world is watching closely as two coalition-led parties vie for power. With nearly half the electorate participating by 2 PM local time at over 40,000 polling centers, analysts are eyeing a decisive result that could define steady governance moving forward.

The election follows a tumultuous uprising led by Gen Z activists and marked by anti-Hasina protests in which thousands were killed. The unrest not only brought months of disruption but also severely impacted crucial sectors like the country’s large garment industry, its second-largest exporter globally.

Now in its first post-uprising election, Bangladesh joins Nepal in facing a key test as global observers await clear results that could influence international dynamics and policy toward the country.

At 4:30 PM (10:30 GMT) after polls closed, counting commenced at polling booths nationwide with officials expecting early trends by midnight and full results likely within days.

Two coalitions dominate the contest, led by former allies—the Bangladesh Nationalist Party under Tarique Rahman and the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami. Preliminary opinion polls favor Tarique’s BNP coalition, while both candidates expressed confidence in their chances of victory, though no immediate winners have emerged.

The election takes place against a backdrop where China has expanded its influence due to long-time ally India’s strained ties with Dhaka. The incumbent Awami League and its leader Sheikh Hasina are banned; she remains in self-imposed exile in India amid ongoing unrest.

In addition to the two-round presidential contest, Bangladeshi citizens have also weighed in on constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening institutions like judicial independence, bolstering women’s rights, and limiting prime ministerial terms. This referendum adds another layer of complexity to an already complex election process.

Over 2,000 candidates, including independents, are vying for 300 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad (House of Nation) ahead of a deployment of more than 2,000 law enforcement personnel at polling stations across Bangladesh. The country’s police, army, and paramilitary forces have been on high alert to ensure the smooth conduct of these free elections.

As voters awaited the polls’ closure, one BNP leader was fatally injured in clashes outside a polling center in Khulna—a coastal city where Hasina holds sway. Elsewhere, three people were wounded when a homemade bomb exploded near another polling site in Gopalganj, Hasina’s stronghold.

Despite these incidents, the atmosphere at many sites appeared festive and encouraging, with voters voicing excitement about their participation and its potential to reshape Bangladesh’s future. With over 175 million inhabitants, this vote carries significant weight on a national stage.

As counting continues into Friday morning, international observers remain poised for clarity in the results that will determine whether Bangladesh embarks upon a period of democratic renewal under any leadership. Whether the election is conducted fairly remains to be seen; if accepted, it could mark an important turning point towards stability and progress in this pivotal nation.
