To commemorate Pakistan’s Independence Day, Bank Alfalah, one of Pakistan’s leading commercial banks, partnered with WWF-Pakistan to carry out a mangrove plantation drive under its Alfa Forest initiative. The activity reinforces the Bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability while supporting Pakistan’s efforts to restore and protect its coastal ecosystems. Held at the WWF-Pakistan Wetland Centre in Karachi, the plantation activity brought together Bank Alfalah colleagues, WWF-Pakistan representatives, environmental experts and volunteers to plant mangroves as part of the Bank’s ongoing environmental conservation efforts.

Alfa Forest, available through the Alfa App, enables customers to contribute to tree plantation through their digital banking transactions. The mangrove plantation drive marks the next phase of the initiative by translating customer participation into on-ground environmental action in partnership with WWF-Pakistan.

The initiative reflects Bank Alfalah’s continued commitment to responsible banking by supporting nature-based solutions that help mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.

Out of 1.4 million active Alfa App customers, over 1 million have participated in the initiative, enabling the plantation of a mangrove tree on their behalf.

Speaking at the event, Muhammad Yahya Khan, Chief Digital Officer, Bank Alfalah, said: “At Bank Alfalah, we believe technology can be a powerful enabler of positive change. Through Alfa Forest, our customers have the opportunity to contribute to sustainable conservation simply by banking digitally. Our partnership with WWF-Pakistan allows us to translate that collective participation into meaningful action on the ground, supporting the restoration of Pakistan’s coastal ecosystems and contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Representing WWF-Pakistan, Rab Nawaz, Senior Director- Programmes said: “Mangrove forests play a vital role in protecting coastal ecosystems, capturing carbon, preserving biodiversity and supporting local livelihoods. We value Bank Alfalah’s commitment to environmental conservation and are pleased to partner on an initiative that encourages public participation while creating lasting environmental benefits.”

Pakistan’s mangrove forests are among the country’s most valuable natural ecosystems, serving as a natural defence against coastal erosion, supporting marine biodiversity and acting as significant carbon sinks. Through Alfa Forest, Bank Alfalah aims to contribute to national climate resilience while encouraging greater environmental awareness among its customers, employees and the wider community.

The initiative forms part of Bank Alfalah’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy and reinforces the Bank’s commitment to advancing sustainable development through strategic partnerships and community engagement.
