Caine: U.S. Progressing in Campaign Against Iran; Hegseth Says Subsunked Iranian Warship

U.S. military leaders highlighted steady progress in their campaign against Iran on Wednesday as they entered its fifth day. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine provided updates from the Pentagon, describing a tense yet hopeful phase where the U.S. continues to demonstrate decisive force.

Hegseth stressed that while the operation was still in its early stages, metrics were shifting toward favorable outcomes as more forces joined the fight. He emphasized that “we could sustain this campaign for as long as needed” and indicated they had only just begun. His comments suggested a resilient, patient strategy against an adversary perceived to be unprepared for such decisive action.

A significant moment in the operation occurred when Hegseth announced via video briefing that an American submarine had destroyed an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean. “This marks history,” Hegseth declared. “For the first time since World War II, a submarine has sunk a naval vessel by a torpedo.”

General Caine echoed these sentiments, adding, “The U.S. is making steady progress against Iran’s naval forces.” He reported that more than 20 Iranian vessels have been destroyed or neutralized thus far.

“These are historic moments in military history,” Hegseth stated fervently. His remarks emphasized the collaborative nature of the campaign with Israel’s Defense Forces, highlighting a combined front capable of overwhelming an adversary considered by many to be on the verge of collapse.

“We are just getting started, and we’re looking forward to expanding our search for targets that could threaten American interests,” Hegseth added confidently.

Hegseth’s optimism was bolstered with stark statistics: The U.S. military has already hit over 2,000 Iranian targets since the campaign began, including command centers, missile sites, and naval vessels.

While progress is evident in their victories, Hegseth remained mindful of the risks posed by his nation’s forces. So far, six service members have been killed and ten seriously injured, a U.S. official disclosed to CBS News. General Caine formally announced the names of four fallen service members that day.

For the families of those lost, “we grieve with you today,” Caine said during Wednesday’s press conference. The identities of other military personnel are currently being withheld for their protection and welfare.

Hegseth’s comments on Monday indicated that “additional losses” were expected as they entered the fifth day. General Caine reaffirmed the campaign’s objectives, stating that eliminating Iran’s ballistic missile systems was the primary goal alongside targeting Iranian naval forces to ensure irreparable damage to their military capabilities.

As the Pentagon briefing concluded, a clear trajectory of this operation emerged: Hegseth and Caine laid out plans for extending the fight and expanding targets, asserting full control over the pace and tempo. The United States maintains its authority in crafting the campaign’s course, emphasizing its readiness to act swiftly and decisively on behalf of American interests.

The U.S. military’s continued success against Iran underscores a critical phase in an operation that is just beginning. As the Pentagon briefing ended, it became clear that while this campaign has only started, its impact could be profound and long-lasting.
