The Cesar Awards took an unexpected turn this year when Jim Carrey graced the stage with an honorary award, sparking intense discussions about his appearance and whether he had impersonated himself in a shocking twist of reality. After Carrey’s performance, neizens across social media began noticing striking differences from his usual persona—his face appeared notably puffy—and theories that he had used an impersonator gained traction.
Alexis Stone, the drag artist, added fuel to this fire by sharing photos on Instagram of a mask resembling Carrey’s face. This post not only fueled speculation but also suggested someone else might have disguised themselves as him at the awards ceremony.
In response to these unfounded claims and theories, Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the Cesar Awards, addressed the situation head-on in a statement to Variety. “Carrey’s visit was meticulously planned months ago,” he stated. “He was deeply touched by the Academy’s invitation and engaged in extensive discussions that lasted eight months, during which we made sure his speech in French was perfect.”
Caulier went on to describe the spectacle: “He arrived with his partner, his daughter, his grandson, and twelve close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him as well. An old friend of Carrey’s, Michel Gondry, who has worked with him on films and two series, was also present, delighted at the reunion.”
In dismissing clone theories outright, Caulier emphasized the positive aspects: “For me, this is not about cloning or impersonation. I remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, and his elegance. It’s clear that Carrey’s presence at the awards ceremony was anything but an act of deception.”
