Chinese dissident Dong Guangping arrived in Toronto on Friday via Air Canada flight. He was detained by South Korean coast guard last month while attempting to flee China in a dinghy off western island. This marks his fourth attempt to escape, following previous detentions for activism and violations of immigration law.
Dong, a former police officer, has been imprisoned multiple times for subversion and participation in Tiananmen Square memorial protests. He previously tried to reach Canada via Thailand and Vietnam but was deported back by authorities.
His friend Sheng Xue posted on Saturday that Dong had landed safely, enjoying noodles with eggs, tomatoes, and shrimps post-landing. She shared photos of him in a car and holding his meal. Despite numerous failed attempts over a decade, Dong remains undeterred, according to Xue’s posts.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has not yet commented on the matter.
