Torrential Rain Causes Devastation Across Central and Southwest China

Torrential rain has caused widespread flooding across central and southwest China, leaving at least 25 people dead and disrupting businesses, schools, and transport. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue affecting areas including Jiangxi, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Hainan.

High Risks of Landslides, Flash Floods, and Urban Flooding

Authorities warn of high risks of landslides, flash floods, and severe urban flooding in the affected regions. In Dachong, a town in southern Guangdong, vehicles were submerged with only parts of handlebars visible above water. Rescue workers used boats to save people trapped by rising floodwaters.

Rescue Efforts Highlight Vulnerability of Elderly Residents

Emergency personnel, including military staff, assisted elderly residents in escaping the flooding. Some rescuers had to swim through buildings to reach those stranded in their homes. One man was trapped in chest-high water for over an hour before being rescued.

Meteorological Factors Behind Intense Rainfall

The unusually large area of intense rainfall spans more than 1,000 km (621 miles), resulting from the convergence of moisture from the Bay of Bengal, South China Sea, and Pacific Ocean. The slow-moving weather system has led to high cumulative rainfall, according to Chinese meteorologists.

Forecast for Continued Flooding Tomorrow

China’s weather bureau predicts that a new round of heavy rain will arrive tomorrow, bringing significant precipitation to many areas in both the north and south. Areas including Shaanxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Guangxi, and Guangdong are expected to experience further flooding.
