DP World Chairman Resigns Amid Epstein Allegations

Dubai’s prominent business figure Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem announced his resignation as chairman and CEO of DP World on Friday, following mounting pressure over allegations of close ties to Jeffrey Epstein. His departure marks one of the highest-profile executive moves resulting from the recent release of Epstein files by the US Department of Justice.

Bin Sulayem, a well-known business leader in the Middle East, has faced scrutiny for his alleged association with Epstein since documents were made public last week. The UK’s development finance agency and Canada’s second-largest pension fund have both suspended their investment relationships with DP World over concerns about Bin Sulayem’s past interactions with Epstein, who was convicted of sex trafficking charges involving an underage girl in 2008.

The fallout from the Epstein files has spread across various industries. Notably, Goldman Sachs general counsel Kathy Ruemmler announced her planned resignation this summer due to her involvement with Epstein’s network. Three members of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration also stepped down after Peter Mandelson was appointed as U.S. ambassador.

The documents reveal a deep connection between Bin Sulayem and Epstein for over a decade, including discussions on business ventures, conversations about sex, and plans to visit Epstein’s Caribbean island. Being named in these files does not indicate any criminal activity; rather, it paints a picture of the financier’s extensive network involving prominent figures in politics, finance, academia, and business.

DP World announced new leadership changes on Friday. Essa Kazim has been appointed as chairman of its board of directors, succeeding Bin Sulayem, while Yuvraj Narayan, who joined DP World in 2004 and held several senior roles within the company, was named group CEO. Kazim currently serves as governor of Dubai International Financial Centre, a prominent financial district.

The departure of Bin Sulayam has significant implications for DP World, which handles approximately 10% of global container traffic across various countries including Canada, Peru, India, and Angola. The company also sponsors the leading professional golf tour in Europe and has been a logistics partner for McLaren’s Formula 1 racing team since 2023.

As other prominent figures have exited their roles amid investigations, DP World’s new leadership will face challenges in navigating these unprecedented circumstances. Despite the recent controversies, Bin Sulayam remains one of Dubai’s most influential business leaders with his extensive network and contribution to the emirate’s growth into a major business and tourism hub.
