France recorded 2,025 excess deaths linked to the June 20-28 heatwave, according to Health Minister Stephanie Rist. France’s public health agency reported a 91% increase in home deaths during this period compared to the previous week, with higher mortality rates also noted in nursing homes and healthcare facilities.
Belgium registered approximately 1,200 excess deaths, including 530 cases of individuals aged 85 and over and 180 people under 65. The Health Ministry stated that this is an unprecedented number for a heatwave in Belgium’s history, highlighting the severity compared to previous summers.
The Dutch health authorities recorded 480 excess deaths, primarily among those over 80 years old. While lower than France and Belgium, these figures still underscore the heightened risk of heat exposure for older residents across all three countries.
