An explosion at a dry dock in Staten Island’s Richmond Terrace killed one person and injured 36 others on Friday. The blast occurred as firefighters were responding to a fire and attempting to rescue two trapped individuals.

Two firefighters were hospitalized, including a fire marshal who suffered a fractured temple and brain bleed, requiring intubation. The other firefighter was in serious condition but showed improvement.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the incident as complex and fast-developing, praising first responders for their bravery. A comprehensive investigation would begin once the fire was extinguished.

Firefighters had responded to reports of a basement fire and two trapped workers when the explosion occurred.
