Flash flood warning issued in northern Michigan due to levee breach on Little Black River

Water levels at Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex reached 7.68 inches below top structure as of Tuesday 7:00 AM update, according to State Emergency Operations Center.

Local authorities urge residents north of Cheboygan to evacuate following the breach.

People living downstream remain under standby for emergency response measures.

In “ready” phase, residents advised to secure belongings and stay alert.

If water levels drop to 6 inches below dam top and rise at rate of 3 or more inches per day, officials will move to “set” phase requiring evacuation within 48 hours.

Emergency officials say situation remains fluid with potential for further rainfall affecting water levels in coming days.
