Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced that flights from Gwadar to Muscat would commence on January 10, 2025, as discussions continue for launching domestic and international operations by airlines from Pakistan, China, Oman, and the UAE.

Chairing a meeting on the New Gwadar International Airport, the prime minister highlighted its potential to bring prosperity to the region by creating new job opportunities. He expressed gratitude to China for constructing the state-of-the-art facility, calling it a testament to the strong friendship between the two nations.

The prime minister directed authorities to strategize making the airport a major transit point and emphasized the importance of improving road connectivity to link the airport with other areas, particularly within the province. He also stressed ensuring robust security measures for the new facility.

The meeting revealed that the Gwadar airport is the largest in the country by area and capable of accommodating A-380 airplanes, with an expected annual passenger capacity of 400,000. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will soon increase flights between Karachi and Gwadar to three per week.

It was noted that essential certifications, including the Aerodrome Certificate, have been issued, and staff from key departments, including Pakistan Customs, Anti-Narcotics Force, and FIA, have been deployed.

Land has been allocated for facilities such as cold storage, warehouses, cargo shades, hotels, shopping malls, and fuel farms. Banks registered with the State Bank of Pakistan are also in talks to establish branches and ATM services at the airport, ensuring comprehensive infrastructure support for travelers and businesses.
