Four fatalities and over a dozen injuries were reported after severe storms with tornadoes struck southern Michigan on Friday. The destruction left hundreds of residents without power and damaged multiple homes, pole barns, and other large structures.

Union City in Branch County was one of the hardest hit areas where at least three individuals lost their lives and numerous others sustained injuries. Local authorities stated that a dozen people were injured there alone. In Cass County, one person died and several more suffered serious injuries.

The National Weather Service issued warnings for the region before reports of tornadoes began circulating on social media platforms, including videos from the affected towns depicting the destructive force of these violent storms. Residents could be seen standing in ruins where their homes once stood, with images of smashed vehicles, poles, trees, and road signs blown over.

A county spokesperson reported that power outages had impacted hundreds of households, while one area near Union Lake saw roughly two miles of power lines down, causing significant disruption. Community leaders emphasized they were preparing to respond adequately to the emergency response efforts underway in southwest Michigan.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated a State Emergency Operations Center to monitor and assist with disaster relief efforts. According to spokesperson Clayton Cummins, the state was prepared to provide resources if needed but had not yet received such requests.

The community faces weeks of recovery as utility crews work tirelessly to restore power and rebuild homes damaged by this devastating storm event.
