Golden Tempo Wins Kentucky Derby; DeVaux Makes History as First Woman Trainer

Golden Tempo, ridden by Jose Ortiz, won the prestigious 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. This victory marked a historic milestone as it was the first time in history that a woman, Cherie DeVaux, trained the winner of America’s most famous horse race.

DeVaux expressed her joy and pride over this achievement, stating she hoped it would resonate beyond racing, symbolizing women’s capabilities in any field they choose to pursue. She credited Golden Tempo for his performance, noting he had always been capable of such feats.

The victory also came after a memorable weekend for Ortiz, who also won the Kentucky Oaks aboard Always a Runner. This success added to the value of Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable’s Golden Tempo, which returned $48.24, significantly more than Renegade ($7.14) and Ocelli ($36.34).
