Musk’s Grok chatbot saw a significant drop in user numbers between March and April 2026. According to Similarweb data, mobile daily active users fell from 13.9 million to 12.2 million, marking a 12.5% month-on-month decline. Web traffic also declined, dropping from 10.5 million to 9.3 million.

Meanwhile, Grok’s competitors saw strong growth. Claude’s global mobile users rose from 16 million to 23 million, and Gemini increased from 12.4 million to 14.8 million daily visits. On the web, Claude surged from 19.8 million to 27.5 million daily visits, while Gemini rose from 83.7 million to 92.1 million.

Despite this decline, Grok’s overall usage remains higher year-on-year, with web visits up 42.4% and mobile users up 83.5% compared to April 2025. However, competitors have posted far stronger growth rates. ChatGPT continues to dominate the AI chatbot market, recording 244.9 million average daily mobile users in April.

The user decline for Grok comes amid reports of product changes, subscription limits, and internal challenges at xAI, which is led by Elon Musk. Additionally, Musk has been involved in a legal dispute with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the company’s structure and founding mission, further highlighting tensions among major players in the AI industry.
