Iran Appoints New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei After Father’s Death

Iran has elevated Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader following the assassination of his father, Ali Khamenei, in US and Israeli air strikes that targeted key Iranian facilities in Tehran. The Assembly of Experts swiftly declared their choice, naming Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

Khamenei, known for his influence within Iran’s security apparatus and extensive networks inherited from his father’s political and economic structures, has long been seen as a leading candidate. The role he now assumes is paramount in shaping the country’s governance, overseeing its military, religious institutions, and political decisions amidst escalating tensions with the United States and Israel.

Ali Khamenei had held this position since 1989 but was killed during the initial US-Israel strikes on August 7th. The attacks led to a series of retaliatory missile barrages across the Gulf region by Iran, resulting in casualties that Iranian officials estimate at over 1,300 civilians and thousands more injured.

In response, American military sources confirmed that one additional US service member had died from injuries sustained during Iran’s initial counter-strikes. This came shortly after President Donald Trump presided over the repatriation of remains for six other Americans killed in the attacks.

Despite mounting international calls for de-escalation and a cessation of hostilities, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, has vowed that Tehran will continue to respond to what it perceives as aggression from the United States and Israel.
