Sheeba Shah, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the women’s barrack at Karachi Central Jail, dismissed allegations on Monday that the prime suspect in the Karachi Karsaz road accident was receiving special privileges.

“All these fake social media reports, I will term them fake. She (the suspect) is not allowed to go home” she told a private news channel.

Her statement followed rumors that jail authorities were providing the suspect with additional comforts, including a private room.

The incident, which occurred on August 19, involved a female driver who lost control of her vehicle, resulting in a crash that killed two people, including a woman, and injured seven others. The suspect, identified as Natasha Iqbal, was remanded in custody last month after a city court ordered a 14-day judicial remand over the fatal accident.

Addressing the rumors, Sheeba clarified that the jail operates a barrack system and emphasized that Natasha is not living in a separate room but in one of the six barracks, accessible to all inmates. “She [Natasha] does not have a separate room and is living in one of the six barracks.”

Natasha is currently held in Barrack No. 4, where she has access to the same facilities as other inmates, according to the DIG. Sheeba assured that all prisoners receive the same level of care, with special attention given to cleanliness in the women’s jail. She suggested that the negative rumors about the jail’s treatment of Natasha might be driven by “personal animosity.”
