Karachi, known as the “City of Lights,” is gearing up to host Pakistan’s inaugural internationally certified marathon on June 28, attracting a diverse array of runners, including national and international athletes.

Organized by Sports in Pakistan in collaboration with the caretaker provincial government of Sindh, the marathon marks a significant milestone for the country. Dr. Syed Junaid Ali Shah, the Caretaker Minister Sindh for Culture, Antiquities & Archives, Sports, and Youth Affairs, announced the historic event at a press conference, emphasizing Pakistan’s achievement in organizing an internationally accredited marathon for the first time.

With meticulous planning and international standards in mind, the marathon will feature well-defined routes and cutting-edge technology akin to prestigious marathons in cities like London and Paris. Notably, the event will navigate coastal routes, minimizing disruption to Karachi’s daily life.

Shoaib Nizam, CEO of Sports in Pakistan, highlighted the transformative impact of the marathon, enabling Pakistani athletes to qualify for global running events. After years of community development efforts, Karachi is poised to make its mark on the international running stage.

The 1st Karachi Marathon, scheduled for January 28, 2024, marks a historic moment as the first full-distance marathon accredited by World Athletics. Participants, regardless of elite status, will have their running times recognized globally, with the event offering categories for all, including a half marathon and a family-friendly 5 km run.

Moreover, a special tracking app developed for the marathon will enable real-time monitoring of participants, enhancing the overall experience and accessibility of the event.
