King Charles set off on his first trip since coronation, visiting U.S. for America’s 250th anniversary. Buckingham Palace stated the visit would celebrate historic and modern ties between UK and U.S.
However, strained relations with Europe pose a challenge. The U.S. and U.K. have long enjoyed a “special relationship,” as Winston Churchill termed it. President Trump visited the U.K. in September, enjoying a carriage ride with King Charles, an inspection of troops, and a state banquet.
Trump’s recent comments on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Iran war response and dismissing the U.K.’s aircraft carriers as “toys” have caused tension. Despite his lack of power to decide government policy, King Charles brings diplomatic significance with his royal visit.
However, risks exist for Charles. Some U.S. lawmakers are demanding testimony from his brother, Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, which could embarrass the king in Washington.
Trump announced the trip would last from Monday to Thursday, with Charles expected to address a joint meeting of Congress and attend a White House banquet dinner. The royal couple is also scheduled to visit New York City.
