
Authorities in Lahore Propose New Names for Historic Roads
A proposal has been presented to rename several historic roads in Lahore, including some of the city’s most well-known thoroughfares. Under the proposed changes, Abbott Road may be renamed “Iftikhar Hussain Mamdot Road,” Baden Road is suggested to be changed to “Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar Road” and Brandreth Road to “Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar Road.”
It has also been proposed to rename Charing Cross as “Faisal Square” and Cooper Road as “Khawaja Nizamuddin Road.” Durand Road is under consideration for the name “Sir Syed Muhammad Iqbal Khan Road,” while Egerton Road may be renamed “Khalifa Shujauddin Road” and Empress Road as “Shahrah-e-Ibn-e-Basees.”
Fane Road has been proposed to be renamed “Justice Kayani Road,” while Ferozepur Road may become “Shahrah-e-Rumi” and Hall Road as “Bahadur Yar Jang Road.” Jail Road is suggested to be renamed “Ghaus-ul-Azam Road,” Lawrence Road as “Liaquat Ali Khan Road,” and McLeod Road as “Maulana Zafar Ali Khan Road.”
Macleagan Road is proposed to be renamed “Jamaluddin Afghani Road,” while the historic Mall Road may become “Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam.” Nabha Road has been suggested as “Sir Muhammad Shafi Road,” Nicholson Road as “Bakht Khan Road,” Queens Road as “Fatima Jinnah Road,” Race Course Road as “Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy Road,” and Temple Road as “Hamid Nizami Road.”
