A smog alert has been issued in Lahore, as the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) surged past 400 on Monday, making it the most polluted city in the world. According to the Punjab Environment Protection Department, Lahore’s AQI hit a staggering 402, while the city’s overall AQI averaged 224.
As winter approaches, smog levels have escalated, leaving many residents suffering from eye irritation, respiratory issues, and infections. Specific areas recorded alarming levels, with the US Consulate showing an AQI of 273, Gaddafi Stadium’s vicinity at 225, and FC College area at 255. Ghazi Road had the highest reading at 402.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that Lahore’s temperatures are also contributing to the discomfort, with lows of 21°C and highs of 33°C, alongside mild winds at 10 kilometers per hour.
In response, the Punjab government is considering artificial rain to mitigate the smog, although no specific timeline has been set for the operation.
