Lahore High Court Raises Concerns Over Dowry Dispute
The Lahore High Court on Wednesday expressed strong concern over a woman’s prolonged suffering in a dowry dispute. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani questioned how much more humiliation and punishment she must endure due to the breakdown of her marriage.
The petition, filed by Muhammad Arshad from Depalpur, sought to halt trial proceedings in family court where the woman had claimed dowry articles and child maintenance. The petitioner’s counsel argued that the trial court began proceedings without receiving their written reply, urging the high court to intervene and stay the process.
Justice Kayani emphasized the lawyer’s duty to resolve the matter, stating they were paid for this responsibility. He also posed hypothetical scenarios about returning dowry items if the husband had filed the claim, questioning whether such a straightforward resolution should be possible post-marriage dissolution.
The judge highlighted systemic delays in such cases, which can take up to six years to be heard, potentially leaving the woman’s belongings at risk during that time. The court adjourned proceedings until next week, hoping for an expedited resolution.
