Lahore High Court Upholds Death Sentences in Gang Rape Case
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has dismissed appeals filed by Abid Malhi and Shafqat Baga against their convictions in the motorway gang rape case. The court upheld the death sentences awarded to both men on March 20, 2021.
During proceedings, counsel for the convicts argued that the trial court had failed to properly assess the facts of the case and had not adequately considered the defense’s position. However, Prosecutor Raheela Shahid maintained that substantial evidence existed against both convicts and urged the court to dismiss the appeals.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the two-member bench headed by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi rejected the appeals and upheld the sentences awarded by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC). The prosecution team was praised for effectively presenting its case.
