Australian Lifeguard Rescues Woman from White Shark Attack at Sydney Beach
On Saturday, a woman in her late thirties was critically injured by a white shark while swimming off Coogee Beach. The attack occurred around midday when the victim and two friends were about 100 feet from shore.
Lifeguard Tony Waller estimated the shark’s length to be approximately 11 feet. Another lifeguard, Charlie Verco, witnessed the incident as he was on his paddleboard. He described seeing the shark emerge from the water and taking the woman underwater before resurfacing her.
The victim suffered severe leg and arm injuries, including a 12-inch-wide bite on her thigh with exposed bone. She was airlifted to a nearby hospital where doctors said she would require extensive surgery due to the severity of her wounds.
Following the attack, Coogee Beach and other local beaches were closed for 24 hours as authorities investigated the incident. This marks one of several shark attacks in Australia this year, with three spearfishing divers killed in less than a month, including two white shark incidents and one involving a bull shark.
