Lionsgate has unveiled its first behind-the-scenes look at Michael, offering fans an early glimpse into what’s set to be one of the year’s most anticipated music biopics. As the theatrical release is expected in the coming months, the studio is ramping up marketing efforts with a fresh video that features Jaafar Jackson, who has been cast as his uncle, Michael Jackson.

In the exclusive clip released today, fans get an intimate look at Jaafar’s preparation for his role, including rehearsal sequences showcasing dance moves that defined Michael Jackson’s global career. The preview emphasizes the production’s focus on authenticity and how it intends to capture the artistry that made Michael Jackson a cultural icon in music history.

The video is expected to generate significant buzz among fans as the theatrical release nears. Jaafar Jackson, who has a familial connection to his late uncle, reflects positively about working on the film, noting he feels “that love for Michael every day on set” from both cast and crew members. His casting has already generated considerable interest.

Michael is expected to chronicle key moments of the singer’s rise to superstardom and cultural impact, making him one of the most influential entertainers in music history. While Lionsgate hasn’t released a full trailer alongside this featurette, the behind-the-scenes footage signals that promotional activity is intensifying as the premiere approaches.

The project began development in November 2019 when producer Graham King secured the rights to produce the film and later announced it with Lionsgate Films as the studio handling global distribution. In January 2023, Antoine Fuqua was named as the director. Casting took place from January to April 2024, including Jaafar Jackson for his uncle’s role, Colman Domingo for Joe Jackson, Nia Long for Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller for John Branca.

Additional photography commenced in June 2025 after filming was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Michael is set for a theatrical release on April 24, 2026, with Lionsgate distributing domestically and Universal Pictures handling international releases. The film’s production highlights include partnerships with Kino Films for Japanese distribution and Sony Music no longer being involved in its marketing.

As anticipation builds, the film positions itself as a major biographical release on the 2026 calendar alongside other significant films about Michael Jackson. Whether it will live up to expectations remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: fans can’t wait for this anticipated look at their beloved icon’s life and career.
