Macron Begins India Trip, Eyes Multibillion Fighter Jet Deal

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to deepen his strategic ties with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai this week. The two leaders are scheduled to convene during Macron’s four-day visit to India, focusing on bolstering cooperation in artificial intelligence and discussing potential investments worth billions of dollars for fighter jets.

Macron’s trip to Mumbai marks the fourth time he has visited India since taking office in 2017. Prior to his arrival, Macron paid tribute at a ceremony honoring victims of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, an act that underscores France’s commitment to global security and its enduring partnership with New Delhi.

Modi highlighted his anticipation for the “advancing our bilateral ties to new heights” during their social media exchange. Modi’s warm words are not unexpected, as he has long sought a stronger relationship with Macron. The French President will engage in further discussions on Tuesday afternoon, describing Modi as a “dear friend.”

In addition to these high-level engagements, the visit includes Macron inaugurating India’s first Airbus H125 helicopter assembly line alongside Prime Minister Modi via videoconference. This partnership highlights France’s pivotal role in India’s growing economy and defense sector.

The centerpiece of Macron’s trip is likely to be a focus on an AI summit scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. This initiative aims to position both countries at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, which could potentially catalyze significant investments and technological advancements.

Despite the global economic uncertainties stemming from Trump’s tariffs and China’s growing influence in the region, Macron’s visit seeks to diversify France’s economic ties with India by exploring possibilities for collaborations in AI and military equipment like the Rafale fighter jets. The Indian defense ministry has approved the sale of 114 additional Dassault Rafales aircraft to India, a deal that could reach an estimated cost of €30 billion ($35 billion).

India’s decision to place this major order marks its move towards reducing dependency on Russian military supplies and fostering self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The Airbus H125 assembly line inaugurated by Macron and Modi showcases another step in their joint venture, promising greater employment opportunities and technological advancement for India.

While these economic ties deepen between the two nations, a sensitive diplomatic issue remains unresolved: the absence of condemnation from India on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This is an area where Macron and Modi may seek to build further trust during their discussions, potentially finding common ground in their shared stance against terrorism and support for global security frameworks.

As the week unfolds, France and India are expected to navigate through these complex diplomatic waters while solidifying their strategic partnerships and forging ahead with new opportunities.
