Macron praises US Supreme Court ruling as check on power in democracies

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his view on Friday’s Supreme Court ruling regarding President Donald Trump’s tariffs, emphasizing the importance of having counterweights within democratic systems. Speaking at this year’s agricultural salon in Paris, he affirmed that a strong judiciary is beneficial for maintaining a balance of power and upholding the rule of law.

Macron addressed critics who viewed the U.S. decision as an attack on American democracy. He argued that it’s essential to have both strength and checks within governmental structures. “It is good to have power and counterweights to power in democracies,” he stated, adding that France would closely examine how Trump’s 10% global tariff might affect French exports.

The agricultural sector, including products like luxury goods and fashion items, has been a cornerstone of the French economy for decades. Macron underscored the importance of continuing these exports as part of his country’s strategy to integrate into international markets despite potential trade disruptions.

He highlighted that calm decision-making was crucial and emphasized the significance of reciprocity in diplomatic relations rather than submitting to unilateral actions by other nations. The president reaffirmed France’s commitment to maintaining strong economic ties with its trading partners while ensuring fair treatment under global economic frameworks.

This stance aligns with Macron’s broader vision for European integration and cooperation, a topic he has frequently discussed during his presidency. His comments indicate that despite recent international challenges, France remains committed to constructive dialogue and balanced engagement in the world economy.
