Fifth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti advanced past a stifling heat of 33 degrees Celsius, where Jannik Sinner also aims to reach the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, fifth seed Elena Rybakina continued her form by defeating Belgium’s Elise Mertens in straight sets.

Former champions Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula faced off at Rod Laver Arena, a match that had significant personal and professional ties between them, as it was their first clash since hosting a tennis podcast together. Despite promising to record an episode on the eve of their match, they ultimately parted ways with Madison Keys suffering a loss while Jessica Pegula dominated in a 6-3, 6-4 victory. This result will see a forfeit bet between the two women’s singles players fulfilled.

In another match, Iga Swiatek or home qualifier Maddison Inglis faces the top-seeded fifth seed Elena Rybakina. Inglis has made history by securing her biggest match on Rod Laver Arena following the withdrawal of Japanese prodigy Naomi Osaka due to an injury issue.

Meanwhile, Sinner, a reigning champion who struggles in hot conditions, will face Luciano Darderi for a place in the quarter-finals. Darderi is the 22nd seed and has never reached this stage before.

In another notable match, Novak Djokovic advances through the draw by defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to face Lorenzo Musetti in the third round, who has previously beaten Djokovic nine times out of ten.

On Sunday night, a clash between Czech Jakub Mensik and Serbian Novak Djokovic was scrapped due to injury. The eighth-seeded American Ben Shelton takes on Norway’s Casper Ruud for their own quarter-final match.

In the midst of these matches, organizers have taken precautions such as implementing shorter matches with ten-minute breaks in certain scenarios to ensure player safety during Melbourne’s scorching heat.
