Security staff discovered Jose Guadalupe Ramos unconscious and unresponsive in his bunk at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. He was declared dead after being transferred to an area hospital.

March 25 marks 14th death in US immigration custody this year

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that at least 14 deaths have occurred in immigration custody since March, prompting criticism from Mexico’s government.

Ramos convicted of possession of controlled substance and theft

ICE stated that Ramos was arrested on February 23 and found to have diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension during an initial health screening. The death is the fourth of a detainee held at Adelanto since Trump took office.

Mexico files legal brief in support of detainees’ lawsuit

The Mexican foreign ministry will file a legal brief supporting a lawsuit brought by detained immigrants alleging poor conditions, inadequate medical care, unsanitary environments, and punitive use of isolation. The issue of immigration detainee deaths will also be raised with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

A spokesperson for DHS defended ICE detention conditions, stating there has been a higher standard of care than most prisons holding US citizens, including access to proper medical care.
